Kahnawà:ke’s local media announced the Call for Applications for the Jesse Deer Memorial Media Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one post-secondary student who is pursuing media-related studies for the fall 2018 Semester. Candidates should demonstrate a sound work ethic, good grades, great motivation and involvement in the community. Applicants need to submit a two minute video or write a 500-word essay explaining their reasons for applying, along with an up-to-date transcript and letter of reference by email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Deadline to apply is Saturday June 30th at noon.
Landfilling is now prohibited within Tioweró:ton territory. The decision was made at a Mohawk Council of Kahnawake meeting this week, and the Mohawk Council of Kanehsatá:ke supports the move. The prohibition was put in place to protect Tioweró:ton’s environment. In recent months a community member acquired material from an asphalt recycling company to use as fill at cabin construction sites. The material was tested and was found to be contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. At this time, only gravel from a recognized quarry is acceptable for driveways/entryways and cabin base needs.
