Representatives from the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) and Tewatohnhi’sáktha are setting up a fund to boost Kahnawake’s economy over time to ensure the independence of the community in the long term. A joint interim committee was named to oversee the fund. The fund will generate income for the community without the help of an outside government. The fund is currently made up of $32 million which was generated from the sale of Continent 8. The committee will consist of 3 MCK representatives, including Grand Chief Joe Norton, 3 from Tewatohnhi’sáktha, and one independent representative.
