Landfilling is now prohibited within Tioweró:ton territory. The decision was made at a Mohawk Council of Kahnawake meeting this week, and the Mohawk Council of Kanehsatá:ke supports the move. The prohibition was put in place to protect Tioweró:ton’s environment. In recent months a community member acquired material from an asphalt recycling company to use as fill at cabin construction sites. The material was tested and was found to be contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. At this time, only gravel from a recognized quarry is acceptable for driveways/entryways and cabin base needs.
