Item added to Fall Community meeting

A new item has been added to the agenda for tonight’s Fall Community Meeting in Kahnawake. The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) says the item will be the course of action being taken by the MCK to address Canada’s S-3 amendments to the Indian Act. That act is expected to result in perhaps as many as 35 000 people considered “Status Indians’ being added to the list of registered Mohawks on the federal list.

Kahsennenhawe Sky Deer is the MCK Chief in charge of the membership portfolio.

“Things are coming to a head because we are seeing people being registerd to our community and it’s important for us to educate the community on what this means and what this could mean for us in the future moving forward. So at tonight’s community meeting there will be a presentation. We will be announcing some things that are going to be happening  in the next little while. It’s very important, as mentioned previous, we tried to educate not only the Iroquois Caucus leadership but the Mohawk Nation about what’s coming, and it’s here.”

Also on the agenda: Land Allotments, Tioweró:ton and Cannabis. The meeting begins at 7 pm at the Golden Age Club.

New schedule for the Mercier bridge closures this weekend. It will be down to one lane in either direction from 2 am Sunday until 5am on Monday morning.

On Friday, the Jacques Cartier And Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) announced it will be closing the R-138 east (from Chateauguay direction) access ramp to the Montreal-bound Mercier Bridge on Friday night from 9pm to Saturday 5am.

The JCCBI says the closure is required to carry-out some minor repairs and maintenance work. There will be a detour via R-132 and Kahnawake Peacekeepers will have officers stationed on R-132 to monitor and direct traffic.

In the Turcot. The 136 West to the 20 West is now closed until Tues 5 am, so getting back from downtown will be challenging.

The 15 N to the Decarie North and the 20 East to the 136 East both close tonight at 10:30 pm. The 15 N will re-open Monday at 5 am, but the 20 will remain closed until Tues morning at 5 am.

A free shuttle will be available at rush hour between the Châteauguay bus terminal and Sainte-Catherine station on the Candiac train line.
