There will be mobile maintenance work on all ramps on the south side of the Mercier Bridge tonight between 8:30 pm and 5 tomorrow morning. It affects both the 138 and 132 up and down ramps in Kahnawake. It means temporary lane and ramp closures.

One the weekend: The MTQ will be shutting down the southbound side of the Mercier Bridge and the Airlie entrance, from Saturday at 1 am to Monday 5 am.
1 lane will be available in each direction on the Montreal bound side of the span.

Nearly 80 per cent vote in favour of ‘Redmen’ name change

The votes are in to drop the Redmen nickname from the  McGill men’s sports teams.

Almost 6000 students voted – nearly 80 per cent in favour – in a referendum that wrapped up yesterday.

Tomas Jirousek, a varsity team rower and a member of the Kainai First Nation in Alberta led the campaign.

“We’re incredibly pleased and emboldened by the results,” he told K1037 News.

The Redmen name has been called racist and the teams even used images of Indigenous people on their logos throughout the 1980’s. However, the University says the nickname refers to the colour of their jerseys.

“It doesn’t matter where the Redmen name came from. It doesn’t matter what the origin is. All that really matters is that Indigenous people are hurting and that’s what the University need to understand here,” said Jirousek.

A University led working group on the principles of commemoration and renaming is scheduled to release its report on December 5th.
