Today is the 40th anniversary of the Howard S Billings walkout in Chateauguay by 300 Kahnawake students – over the creation of Bill 101 and the charter of the French language a year earlier. It required students to apply for a special eligibility certificate go to school in English. It led to the creation of the Kahnawake Survival School. A walk to KSS is taking place this morning, beginning at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Several Schools in Kahnawake will let out early today due to a heat warning. Kahnawake Survival School is to let out at 12:00 noon; Nursery and kindergarten classes at Karonhianonhnha and Kateri schools will let out 11:15 am; with Grades 1-6 following shortly after at 12:00 p.m. Karihwanoron will be closing today at 11:45 due to the heat as well, however the pre-nursery at Karihwanoron/Averys will remain open as they have AC in the building. Step By Step will be open all day as they are fully air conditioned.
