K1037 News has learned that the work blitz this summer on the Mercier Bridge will take place beginning the day after the St Jean Baptiste holiday on Monday June 25th. The southbound or Kahnawake bound portion of the Quebec span will be shut down for a period of 8 weeks according to Sterling Deer a co-owner and partner in the Mohawk Bridge Consortium, the Kahnawake company that has been contracted to perform the work. It is expected that they will remove the temporary Jertsey barriers that have been in place since 2010. The guardrails will then be rebuilt. MBC is stepping up their work underneath the span to reinforce the span. Some overnight and weekend closures are likely before that. Traffic will be down to 1 lane in each direction for the bridge throughout the 8 weeks from June 25th scheduled until August 20th. No word on when the span will be replaced – after it was announced last year.

There was an armed robbery last night in Kahnawake. At 3:30 this morning 2 men stormed into the Factory Depot – next door to K1037 and held up the female clerk. They forced her, at gunpoint, to turn over an undisclosed amount of cash. The Kahnawake Peacekeepers are investigating. No one was hurt. The suspects made their getaway in a car.
In an unrelated incident a non local man in his 50’s entered the Up In Smokes store just before 9 pm. He went to pay for a soda – when the clerk opened the cash – he reached in and grabbed some money and fled, only to return and steal some cigarettes. He fled in a vehicle according to the Peacekeepers. He is described as a white, English speaking man. There were no injuries.
